Summary
This is an easy and not very long hike. But it is recommended to do it in a group and, preferably, with someone who already knows the area. Do not forget to bring enough water for the entire route. Starting at Ladeira dos Tabajaras, formerly Ladeira do Barroso, the walk follows a paved road amidst some community houses before entering the main trail. It is a wide, tree-lined path with some bamboo groves and viewpoints overlooking the city's South Zone. Highlights include the Mirante do Morro São João viewpoint. The trail continues parallel to Ladeira do Leme until reaching Parque Estadual da Chacrinha, where there are picnic tables and restrooms. The park is open until 6 PM in summer and until 5 PM in winter. At Ladeira do Leme, a historic stone fortification (former Reduto do Leme).

How to Get There
Currently the best alternative is to access the top of Ladeira dos Tabajaras via Rua Siqueira Campos in Copacabana, since the previous section is currently unavailable for hiking.
However, for safety reasons, we strongly recommend that this section be done as an out-and-back route, entering through Parque da Chacrinha, climbing to the summit of Morro São João (see map and route .gpx), and advancing only as far as the fork that gives access to Agulhinha do Inhangá, returning again to Parque da Chacrinha, paying attention to its opening and closing hours.

Trail Description
(Direction West x East / Barra de Guaratiba x Morro da Urca)
This section is a continuation of the Alto da Rua Vitória Régia x Ladeira dos Tabajaras section, which is currently unavailable for hiking. The current section begins at the top of Ladeira dos Tabajaras, turning right at the fork opposite the UPP (Pacifying Police Unit). The walk follows a paved road amidst some houses; after (170 m) the trail begins. Now we go up a wide tree-lined trail where we will have some viewpoints on our left side. Soon we will reach the Mirante do Morro São João viewpoint. Now we go down (650 m) to the fork of the exit branch towards Rua Álvaro Ramos in Botafogo. Continuing along the main trail we will descend (650 m) passing by a staircase until we reach the bamboo clearing. Now we have the final section where we will walk (350 m) through the park grounds past courts, restrooms and a square until we reach the exit gate. From the gate we can walk another (200 m) to Praça Cardeal Arco Verde where there is a subway station. We continue climbing to the top of Ladeira do Leme for another (450 m) until we reach the Reduto do Leme or Forte do Leme, a fortified structure made up of two stone arches that cross Ladeira do Leme, end of this section and continuation to the Morro da Babilônia x Praia Vermelha section.

Currently there is no partnership between the Transcarioca Trail and local businesses.
At the entry and exit points of the main trail there are numerous shopping and dining options.
Water Points
There are no water points along the route.
It is recommended to get water at a store before entering the trail, as there are no streams with water along the route and during the summer the temperature gets very high on this section.

Historical Facts
This section runs along the entire ridge and parts of the slopes of Morro São João.
Morro São João acts as a crucial geographic and historical divider between the neighborhoods of Botafogo and Copacabana, having served in the past as a strategic point of colonial defense and in the urban integration of Rio's South Zone.
Colonial Landmark and Defense Ladeira do Leme and Arches: In the 18th century, the access region that surrounds the hill received stone arches made of stone, lime and whale oil, about 5 meters high and 3 meters wide, to block invasions coming from the former Praia de Copacabana.
Observation Post: The top of the hill housed a military signalman responsible for sending visual alerts to other fortifications of Guanabara Bay about the approach of vessels.
The history of Ladeira dos Tabajaras dates back to the route Dom Pedro used as a shortcut to go from Jardim Botânico to the coastal region. At that time the section was called "Caminho do Boi"; in 1855, it became known as "Ladeira do Barroso", in honor of José Martins Barroso, who turned it into a road linking Copacabana and Botafogo.
It was in 1917 that the path became known as Ladeira dos Tabajaras, because of indigenous people who, coming from the northeast, inhabited the hills São João Batista and Saudade, both cut by the slope. The community has existed since 1921; the first occupants were 19 families of cemetery employees, placed there with the support of Santa Casa de Misericórdia.
