Conservation Units

Created by Municipal Decree No. 20.149/2001, the Grumari Municipal Natural Park is known for its beautiful and famous Wild Beaches (Grumari, Abricó, Perigoso, Funda, Meio, Inferno and Conchas), some of which are accessible only by trails or by sea. It houses the largest restinga area in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Most trails are considered easy and reveal stunning viewpoints.

Pedra Branca State Park is an environmental conservation unit located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is considered the largest urban forest in the world, with 12,500 hectares of extension. Pedra Branca Peak, at 1,025 meters altitude, is the highest point in the city and is located within the park.

Located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, with access from the North, South and West Zones, Tijuca National Park (Parna Tijuca or PNT) protects the largest urban forest in the world replanted by man, with an area of 3,953 ha of Atlantic Forest. It is the most visited National Park in Brazil, receiving more than three million visitors per year, both Brazilians and foreigners of all ages.

Created by Municipal Decree No. 29.538 of 03/07/2008. Area: 46.7 ha. It is an area of gardens and forest, crossed by the Rainha River, which at one point is dammed to form a lake. Its biome is characteristic of the Atlantic Forest. Although part of the park has been reforested, there are still native Atlantic Forest sections.

Initially a private property, it housed the summer residence of the Marquis of São Vicente, José Antonio Pimenta Bueno, built in 1809. The house was located on higher ground at the back of the park, where the Rio de Janeiro City Historical Museum now operates. In 1939, the Guinle family transferred the property to the Federal District government, which then determined its conversion into a public park.

Catacumba Park is in an area that was reforested in the 1970s. With nearly 27 hectares, the park has a great diversity of trees, plants and flowers. In the lower part, various sculptures can be admired outdoors. Paved paths and small squares with stone floors make the place perfect for walking and picnics. In the upper part, the denser forest takes over.

Created by Municipal Decree 19143/00. José Guilherme Merquior Municipal Natural Park has 8.29 hectares and is located in the neighborhoods of Copacabana and Lagoa, with an Atlantic Forest ecosystem. The park was created by the same Decree as the Fonte da Saudade Municipal Park.

Created by Municipal Decree No. 19.143 of 13/11/2000. Fonte da Saudade Municipal Natural Park has 2.22 hectares and the local ecosystem is anthropomorphized Atlantic Forest. The park was created in 2000 with the objective of recovering and conserving the Atlantic Forest ecosystem, developing recreation, leisure and ecotourism, promoting environmental education programs, preserving landscape integrity, among others.

Paisagem Carioca Municipal Natural Park is inserted in the urban fabric of the city, located between the neighborhoods of Leme, Copacabana, Botafogo and Urca. This Conservation Unit stands out for the importance of its scenic beauties that compose the city's landscape, for the presence of areas with public use infrastructure (Chacrinha Sector) and for its network of trails, which allows the enjoyment of its stunning scenery.

Visitors arriving in Rio de Janeiro are greeted by a natural monument formed by Sugarloaf and Urca hills which, with their five hundred million years of geological history, guard the entrance to Guanabara Bay. Beyond the extraordinary beauty of this geological site, the ensemble is surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, with its great biodiversity, offering visitors the wonder of its flora and fauna, considered among the richest on the planet. So that future generations can continue to enjoy these beauties, the area was officially designated by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall in 2006 as a Conservation Unit called the Sugarloaf and Urca Hills Natural Monument (MoNa).
